Gold, Artifacts and Helicopter Rescue

Yo All ... I had a particularly enjoyable day in AZ's awesome Sonoran Desert today...Gold, artifacts and adventure ... There's an area I've been putting by for several years that for some reason I just didn't tackle ... The mineralization looked good, but I knew it was going to be a fair hike in ... So today I took off to the top of the mountain to see what was on the other side...On Google Earth, it looked interesting...Lots of red dirt and colorful mineralization ... When I got to the top of the ridge, the first thing I saw was a matate and mano, sitting there on the ground just the way the Indian left it hundreds or maybe a couple thousand years ago ... That gave me a good feeling about the area ... I hooked up ol' Baboo with the NF 14" DD XP I've been using exclusively the past couple weeks and headed down into a semi-steep drainage ... Only a couple hundred feet down I got my first signal ... It was faint and more up on the side of the gully than actually in the gut ... But there it was .. A nice little .7 gram smooth beauty with no rock in it ... Further down, about another 100' I got a screamer right in the middle of the gut and packed down in some hard red material ... This one was the biggest for the day at 2.3 grams and solid gold ... Another smooth waterworn nugget in an area of angular sharp rocks...Puzzling ... Down the gulch just another 5' I got another signal...1.2 grams ... all of them were water worn and totally different than the gold I've found within a two mile radius of this spot ... Puzzling .... So here's some pix of nuggets, finds and the Indian goodies... At the end of the day, I headed back to the truck and there were paramedics, rescue squads, sheriffs and all kinds of commotion ... As I was coming out of the mountains, I almost had a head on with a guy on a quad whoe was the first of about seven or eight older guys driving like banshees on a gulch... When I got down to where the truck was and talked to the sheriffs, it turned out one of those older guys flipped his quad and had to be airlifted out to a Phoenix hospital...It's sure getting to be that time of the year that a guy needs to stick to the back trails to keep from getting run over by snowbirds!!! ...Other than that, Great day in the big AZ ... Cheers, Unc
Attached thumbnail(s)

A Navy diver back in WWII was recovering remains and weapons from the sunken Arizona in Pearl Harbor, he also took some of the ship's formal silverware. He died in 1964 and his family was just now going to auction the silverware off at a Cincinnati auction house. The Navy heard about it and put a stop to the sale of the items next month. So I took him to a new spot I have been curious about. We spent the last two days systematically going up this wash , going up that wash, and even carried the quad over an approximately six foot waterfall to go further up an unexplored area..Well we didn't have much luck until today. We picked this new wash that had no tale, tale signs But immediately got many clear signals with the GP3500 and GPX4000. One after another , after another. Wow, I honestly did
not expect to get a nugget on my first target. My buddy Nate got over his first Az. nugget today also. Well I will be at
that new dink wash again. Here are some pics.

High Mountain Gold

Well Lucky and I made it out today for a couple of hours up in the high country. We were able to run into a little spot with some gold in the ground. Both of us were running 12x15 commander coils and they where punching deep today. I dug a .7dwt nugget that was about 12-13 inches deep. Kind of a funny target, it would only give me a signal swinging the coil left to right. The signal was really more like a pause in my threshold. After I dug down about 6 inches was it starting to give me a good signal. After popping it out of the hole it was banging thougt it was going to be bigger but I was happy. I had to have Rick come over to see the hole he couldn't believe it either. Those Commander 12x15 mono coils have depth and sensitivty like you wouldn't believe I just love that thing. I was able to pull out 4 nuggets for a total weight of 1.7dwt and Rick got the skunk off his back with a nice .3dwt nugget. He had a problem with his detector setting but I will let him tell you that one.
So if you ever wonder why there are a million boot tacks everywhere, here ya go. Rick and I found a couple of these laying around and there was a ton of boot tacks in them, I mean just a ridiculous amount of them. Those old timers didn't mess around when it came to there boots. Pretty funny thought I would share it with everyone. Anyways hope you all are finding gold too!

Lovin' and learnin' the 4500

I went camping with the family this weekend and did some prospecting in an area where I had found some nuggets before with the GP3000. On Friday the 13th I got 16 nuggets. About half of them in a wash I'd been over several times before with my GP 3000. This time I was using the GPX 4500 and 17" NF elliptical mono. It was getting sub 1/2 gram nuggets pretty deep and some less than 0.1g in the bedrock. I credit some of them to being able to really tune out the interference so I could listen more carefully to the really faint sounds.

My daughter Zoe was helping me dig. I'd say, "I think maybe I have something here." Often she couldn't hear what I was hearing until we got down a little deeper. We'd work on it together taking turns with each handful of dirt over the coil. Eventually she would excitedly say, "There it is I see it!" Then she and her sister would run it back and forth to my wife. I couldn't believe they never lost one. They would fight over who got to drop it in the bottle to hear the clunk.

On Sat. we used a drywasher to sample a small wash I had pulled about 20 tiny nuggets out of before. We got about 3/4g of small flakes and nuggets in an area about 3'X3'. Then Sat. evening I went to another spot where I had picked up a few little ones with the GP3000 and quickly got 3 more including a 1.6g at about 10" I picked up a couple more little ones Sunday before we dry washed another area. We only got about 6 more little flakes from an area 3'X5' that time.

Total haul including the dry washer gold was 24 nuggets and 13.6g It was good to be back out in the desert and back in the saddle with the GPX.

I had one pretty funny incident that almost turned tragic. While sitting around the campfire I was looking the nuggets in a glass vial and dropped it. It hit the leg of my chair and broke sending nuggets into the fine dirt. I picked up as many as I could then panned up the rest. I'm pretty sure I got them all.

I have two Coiltek UFO loops for sale. These have been used but not abused. They measure 12" by 23" and are Mono. Designed for the Minelab SD and GP gold machines but will also work on the Whites TDI. They are not heavy at 2.5 lbs but need a wide open area to use. The depth capability is incredible on large targets yet retain enough sensitivity to detect half dwt. nuggets. They also are custom made with a longer cable for use with the detector chest or hip mounted.
I'm only selling them because and injury doesn't enable me to use the large coils any more. $100 each plus shipping. Would consider trade for gold. Email me at digger-bob@comcast.net or PM me here.

Well, it won't let me upload pictures, says it's too big. Took them just fine on other forums.
Yo All...Today was a lucky Friday 13th for yer Unc in the Dubyah...Scoped out a new, untouched gulch near Wickenburg yesterday and today I got out to it about noon...Fricken catsclaw hell for about 1,000 feet...Vertical walls so I had no choice but to rip my way through it...Looked like I had been in a knife fight by the time I reached the top...Only targets were two boot tacks...I had examined the gulch system the night before on Google earth and noted that another little gulch about 1,000 feet east had a small red patch near its source...I decided to hike on over the ridge to check it out, even though most of it was that hot purple bedrock that's really noisy to beep in...When I dropped down into the gulch, sure enough it was very noisy, kind of a constant moaning from my ol' Baboo SD2100, even with the DD NF 14" XP...But then I got into an area where there were lots of round river cobbles all mixed up with the hard angular rocks which are more common to the area...I began to realize that the round cobbles were sloughing off of a red rhyolite or lava and most of the rocks in the lava were rounded while the rest of the rocks in the area were sharp edged ... I slowly beeped my way down the little gully which was the top of the gulch and suddenly a the top of an inside turn got a hellashishly loud "round" sound ... Dug down about 10 inches and got this beautiful 4.1 gram nugget...I think it came out of the lava and was in an ancient stream-bed when the volcanic eruption spewed lava over it capturing round river rocks and nuggets too ... The area certainly deserves at least one more visit since gold was the only target in the entire gully system ... Here's some pix ... Cheers, Unc
